Passage: 1 Timothy 1

Embracing Abundant Grace: Lessons from 1 Timothy 1
Introduction
This past Sunday, I had the privilege of attending the adult men’s Sunday school class, and I must say, it was a refreshing experience. I want to extend my gratitude to Brandon and Ben for their leadership. There’s something truly special happening in our community, and it’s uplifting to witness the commitment of the men who are actively participating.
A Testament of Healing
During the class, I reflected on a prayer request we had a month ago for a baby named Aliyah, who was born prematurely weighing just 2 pounds. I am overjoyed to share that she is now thriving at 8 pounds! It was a blessing to meet her and her mother, Hannah, at the café in Mount Vernon. This serves as a reminder of the power of prayer and the healing grace of God.
Personal Reflections on Health
As many of you know, it has been almost a year since my stroke. I want to take a moment to express my gratitude to all of you who visited and prayed for me during my recovery. Your support meant the world to me, especially the handmade cards from the children, which I still cherish on my fridge.

While I feel much better these days, I still experience mental fatigue as the day progresses. Mornings tend to be my most energetic times, but by late afternoon, I often find myself exhausted. This fatigue is exacerbated by noise and intense conversations, which can quickly deplete my energy. However, I remain hopeful and trust in God’s plan for my health and ministry.
Transitioning in Ministry
With that said, I would like to share an important announcement: I plan to step aside from pastoring at the end of 2025. This decision comes after much prayer and reflection, and I hope to have your blessing as we move forward. I remain committed to serving the church during this transition.
Exploring 1 Timothy 1: Abundant Grace
Today, I want to delve into 1 Timothy 1, where Paul writes to Timothy about the theme of abundant grace. Paul reflects on his past, acknowledging that he was once a blasphemer and a persecutor. Yet, he emphasizes the mercy he received from Christ.
Key Takeaways from 1 Timothy 1

Thankfulness for Grace: Paul begins by expressing gratitude for the grace he received. He acknowledges that he was enabled by Christ to be in ministry despite his past.
The Power of Mercy: Paul emphasizes that he obtained mercy because he acted in ignorance. This highlights the transformative power of God’s grace, which can redeem anyone, regardless of their past.
A Pattern of Long-Suffering: In verse 16, Paul notes that his life serves as a pattern for others who will believe in Christ. This reminds us that our stories of redemption can inspire others.
Exceedingly Abundant Grace: Paul describes God’s grace as “exceedingly abundant,” which means it surpasses all expectations and is always available to us. This grace is not a one-time event but a continuous gift from God.
Faith and Love as Results of Grace: Paul mentions that grace leads to faith and love, which are essential components of a believer’s life. Embracing God’s grace allows us to cultivate these virtues.

Embracing the Invisible for the Eternal
In 2 Corinthians 4:18, we are reminded that “while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” This scripture encourages us to focus on the invisible aspects of our faith, which point to the eternal truths of God’s kingdom.
Seeking the Eternal

Set Your Affections Above: As believers, we are called to seek those things which are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Our focus should be on the eternal rather than the temporary distractions of this world.
Our Life is Hidden with Christ: Colossians 3:3 reminds us that our life is hidden with Christ in God. This profound truth gives us hope and assurance as we navigate life’s challenges.
Mortifying Earthly Deeds: We are encouraged to put to death the deeds of our earthly nature, aligning our lives with the values of God’s kingdom. This process is essential for spiritual growth and maturity.

Conclusion: Living in Grace and Embracing the Eternal
As we reflect on Paul’s message in 1 Timothy 1 and the call to focus on the eternal, let us remember the importance of embracing God’s abundant grace in our lives. We are all on a journey of growth and transformation, and God’s grace is the foundation that sustains us.

Let us be mindful of our own “but God” moments—those pivotal times when God intervenes in our lives. May we share our stories of grace with others, serving as a testament to the transformative power of Christ.
